Sleep Strike

Why is it that babies trick you into thinking they're starting to figure something out and they're going to go along with what you want them to do, only to suddenly "forget" how to do it? Cora has decided that sleep is a pointless endeavor. In the words of the infamous Barenaked Ladies, "Who needs sleep? No, you're never gonna get it." And we're not. Cora wakes up every 30 to 90 minutes all day and all night. Fun.

I was just starting to think that I could be an adult and do work again, too. With a conference this weekend and a draft of a prospectus due, I just might go a little nuts.

So, I need coping strategies. Help!!!

First Rice Cereal

Josh gave Cora her first taste of rice cereal, and thanks to the marvels of modern technology (skype and ichat) Grandma, Opa, Papi, and Gigi all got to watch the mess that ensued. The pictures are in order.

Happy Halloween!

Papi and Gigi came in (sadly, for less than 24 hours) to celebrate Halloween with Cora. We arrived home from Banff at 2 AM, and they pulled in (after a long night of work for my dad) at 7:30 AM. They spent the day snuggling her and making her laugh. video
Gigi brought decorations that were mine from when I was little, so we dressed up the house while eating her famous pizza rolls and homemade cookies. My neighborhood had a little baby parade for the kids--check out Cora's friend, Jamie's monkey costume below! We plan to turn this into a big celebration next year since this last minute event had such a good turnout. Then, we visited a few friends to trick-or-treat. Cora's kitty-cat costume from Auntie Liz was a big hit, especially with the cute whiskers and tail that Gigi added. Josh scandalized the students at the local sub shop with his tiny shorts--he dressed as a track coach. Despite warnings that our neighborhood never gets trick-or-treaters, we even had two groups of kids ring our bell. Papi even got to watch a bit of the Penn State game. Halloween was clearly a success!

Belly Laugh

As with most babies, Cora likes to be surprised. Her favorite is when someone moves fabric or something similar quickly over her head, making a loud snapping noise, motion, and wind. This week, she started all out laughing at this.

Play Dates

Cora has play dates with kids, grown ups, and pets on a regular basis. She's really interested in these friends, and they seem to like her, too.

Blame Canada! (for my lack of posts)

We are in Banff! Actually, we are staying in Lake Louise, one of the most beautiful places in the world. Josh has a conference, and Cora and I tagged along. We've had many firsts. Of course it was her first plane ride and international trip. She did great on the plane. When we ascended, she put her hand on her ear (she was sleeping) just as my ears popped. I nursed her, and she went back to sleep. She only cried a few times--just when she was hungry and sleepy, nothing out of the ordinary. It's also her first time above 5,000 feet elevation and her first time changing time zones. We saw our first elk on the side of the road while driving from Calgary to Lake Louise, though I think she might have been asleep. Yesterday, she saw her first snow ever. She opened her eyes wide and gasped every time a flake hit her. Then, today when I put some in her hand, she just stared intently, curiously. She seemed interested in the way it worked--perhaps this inquisitiveness comes from her dad, the materials scientist. Finally, tonight she went in a swimming pool for the first time. Thanks to her baby fat, she floats really well, and she was kicking, too. She was a bit unsure about the cool water, but she seemed to like being pulled around. With cheeks like hers, I don't think I need to worry about drowning--she carries flotation devices with her everywhere. She's pretty worn out now, especially because we also went for a hike around the lake today. She had to get all bundled up (she screams every time we have to put on winter clothes), but she seemed to like the walk in the woods. She checked out the scenery before falling asleep in the Baby Bjorn. It's amazing how easy it's been to travel with her. She seems to fall asleep at the right times and want food at the right times. Let's hope this kind of behavior continues into her toddlerhood.

Fuzzy Wuzzy

Cora has found her hair, and boy is it fun to play with! It's also started growing, so it's become fuzzy and soft.
